WRITING A RESUMÉ
A résumé is a self-marketing tool. It is designed with one purpose in mind – to sell your skills, knowledge and experience to a prospective employer. An effective résumé speaks to the employer’s needs and requirements as well as demonstrates a match between what you have to offer and those requirements. It stimulates interest in you by summarizing information, unique qualities, well-developed skills, relevant work or academic experiences or accomplishments that clearly differentiates you from the competition.
Tips for writing a good, effective resumé.
§ Type your resumé neatly and free of errors.
§ Limit your resumé to one to two pages.
§ Start with your most recent degree or the course in which you are currently enrolled.
§ List your most recent work experience first including the dates.
§ Include a description of abilities or skills.
§ Do list hobbies or areas of personal interests.
§ List two or three references (not family members) with an address or telephone number for each. Do not list anyone without first obtaining his or her permission.
§ Photographs ( if included ) should demonstrate a professional image.
§ Do not send a photocopy of the resumé.
§ A clean, short, personal cover letter should be sent with the résumé.
